Possible New Leak of Rapidfire 1983 Demo?

"I remember for two years standing at the Troubadour and people wouldn't talk to me; I didn't know what to say to them, so you just watched and learned for a long, long time," Axl Rose told Kerrang.

Kevin Lawrence remembers seeing ‘Bill’ around in those days. They began nodding at each other, and eventually struck up a conversation.

“He said he was a singer,” recalls Lawrence. “I said, ‘Do you have a PA?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ And I said, ‘You’re hired.’”

Lawrence was fronting a trio called Rapidfire and he was tired of trying to be the singer and the guitarist. Bill was a dream come true. He was smart, clean and he had his own PA. He asked Bill (he was never Axl then, says Lawrence) to join him and Mike Hamernik on bass and Chuck Gordon on drums. They were a hard rock band, along the lines of AC/DC or Judas Priest, and played small metal clubs around L.A.. All the material was written by Lawrence.

They rehearsed at Chuck’s parents’ house in Encino, recalls Lawrence – in his small bedroom with drums and Marshall stacks crammed next to their ears.

“The cops would come all the time and tell us to shut it down. Actually,” he backtracks, “if I remember right, Chuck’s sister was a cop. We couldn’t get in too much trouble!”

“The songs were already written when Bill joined,” recalls Lawrence, “so he just learned them. He didn’t have the opportunity to write. He did show me the lyrics to one song, Back Off Bitch, though.

“He was a perfectly normal guy when I knew him. He was hardworking, he always showed up to rehearsals and gigs on time and he did a good job at promoting the band as well.”

“He was a perfectionist – we all were,” says Lawrence, but adds there was no sign of the famous temper. “He wanted to be a rock star, and he worked at it. All the guy wanted was to be a rock star -- and a pair of I think snakeskin cowboy boots. He really wanted those boots.”

“We’d sit around and smoke cigarettes and talk about what being a rock star was going to be like. He was serious about it. I was serious about it, we were doing business.”

The band was scoring a few gigs around town at clubs like the Troubadour and the metal mecca, Gazzarri’s.

Lawrence remembers Bill wearing one glove and holding his mike out like Freddie Mercury. He’d wear the occasional bandana and would move around the stage with moves similar to those in his later years.

At Lawrence’s request, Bill was singing in the lower register. The guitarist soon rounded up some money, hired a small studio and had the band record four of his songs – Ready To Rumble, All Night Long, The Prowler, and On The Run.

It was May, 1983, shortly before the Rapidfire’s demise.

Bill was working a day job in an adult movie house, recalls Lawrence. He was still with Gina in those days, although she was moving out and Izzy was moving in.

Lawrence figures that Izzy was the ultimate instigator of Bill’s split with the band. Izzy was either no longer in Shire or about to no longer be in Shire, and he was turning his attention to starting a band with his willing buddy Bill.

“Izzy really didn’t like that Bill was in Rapidfire,” muses Lawrence. “And he really didn’t like the idea of Bill being in a band when Izzy wasn’t in a band.”

Rapidfire’s metal rock wasn’t Izzy’s thing – by that point, he was totally enamored with the Hanoi Rocks-style glam – and he told Bill he was wasting his time. He had a vision for a band, and his Indiana friend was a big part of the vision. It sparked a tug-o-war for the singer’s attention. It became immediately apparent that Rapidfire had lost when Bill arrived for what would be his last show.

“He showed up at the last minute at the club, which was unusual,” recalls Lawrence. “And he had his hair teased way out, the white powder cake up, lipstick, etcetera. He had on this leather jacket that they had spray-painted pink. He obviously wanted to do something else. We never really argued about it, it was amicable.

“I said, ‘I guess this is your last gig, huh.’”

Axl Beats Down a Pap at LAX (...and the Media Scuttlebutt)

So much Guns N' Roses news ... so little time ...

Regarding the Axl/Paparazzi incident at LAX on December 10:

The first account came via LiveDaily (owned by Ticketmaster/Irving Azoff BTW),
At Los Angeles International Airport, Rose got into a scuffle with a paparazzo that ended up with a few bloodied participants. Even with Rose flying to Taiwan there is still concern about whether he will be in the mood to perform, a question that had been raised earlier in the week when the rest of the band flew to the gig without the singer.
TMZ picked up the story the next day, and they followed-it-up the next day with this video which proved that the whole thing was true:

Interestingly, a guy named "Tom" posted the following comment on page 2 of the TMZ article,
They'll probably delete this but this whole thing is a scam. I was at the airport that night and I'm actually in the video ... The paparazzi were taunting Axl for ages and the whole thing kicked off when one of the paparazzi knocked into his mom. This video looks as if it were shot by somebody at the airport but was in fact shot by one of the paparazzi team. We saw them all standing together laughing about this afterwards. So they basically MADE this news knowing that taunting him and shouting swears at him would piss him off. I think this is disgusting behavior from the press, shouting insults and curse words around families to elicit a response from a celebrity. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Also, if this is disputed I am prepared to go on record to expose the lengths this reporters will go to.

Guns N' Roses official(?) Facebook page issued a statement regarding the fracas,
Axl Rose Accosted by Belligerent Paparazzi at LAX

Lead singer of Guns N' Roses unhurt in encounter with unruly photographers

(Los Angeles) December 10, 2009 –
Axl Rose, lead singer for the legendary rock group Guns N' Roses, was unhurt last evening when he was accosted by an unruly group of paparazzi at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

At the time of the incident, Mr. Rose was en-route to Taipei, Taiwan, to kick-off Guns N' Roses’ tour of Southeast Asia including shows in Taiwan, Korea and Japan.

Mr. Rose, who was about to enter a security checkpoint at LAX when the altercation took place, was approached by a group of unchecked and unruly photographers who became aggressive with the singer and female members of the traveling group.

Mr. Rose was not injured during the unprovoked attack and was able to board his flight without further incident.
Next up, Rolling Stone published these awesome pictures of the scuffle:

If you're unfamiliar with the members of Axl's entourage, the young man in the leather jacket is Fernando Lebeis, son of Axl's personal assistant, Beta Lebeis (not pictured) who was apparently struck by the paparazzo "They hit our moother." The beautiful young woman restraining Mr. Rose in none other than Sasha Volkova, a model who has been linked to Axl for man years. Her artwork appears in the Chinese Democracy booklet.

But wait - there's more! This morning at 2:30 AM, Axl Rose released a statement via the band's official Facebook page. In it, he denies releasing the initial statement (above), "calls-out" manager(?) Irving Azoff, the press, and Kim Jong-il:
Axl Rose denies releasing press statement regarding rumored LAX incident. "I did not release any statement or authorize either any statement or anyone to release a statement regarding anything at any airport anywhere.

We had recently began working with newer individuals in management in relation to our current Asian tour in support of our Guns N' Roses album "Chinese Democracy" in addition to Irving Azoff's though as it happens we are once again touring Asia without management of any kind.

Imo this non sense may be some type of manufactured or publicity stunt.

We're looking forward to performing in Osaka and Tokyo Japan doubling our pyro show and with our "new" full stage as local requirement have limited us on its use in our last performances.

Thanks to everyone who's come out to see us. It's been really fun so far and the addition of our new guitarist Dj Ashba joining us along w/ guitarists Ron Bumblefoot Thal and Richard Fortus, gives the night a kick in the pants.

Hope to see the rest of you soon!!

And to any publications running this; please feel free to tack on whatever negative agenda supporting nonsense you generally do (You know who you are!!). After all it's only someone else's livelihood you media police state, no fun, spoil sport, communist bastards.

Peace!!"

The band's currently in Seoul, South Korea where the promote was "sorry" to inform them they would not be able to use a helicopter from the airport to the venue as North Korea would "wonder" what it is!!
CLASSIC AXL ROSE!

This stuff is too good.

"Street of Dreams" Hits #44 on Canadian Rock Chart

Rockstar Weekly
With Canada gearing up for the new Guns N' Roses tour in early 2010, GN'R has officially entered the Canadian rock radio charts with "Street Of Dreams," the new single from last year's Chinese Democracy CD.

The song debuted on the Canadian Active Rock Charts at number 44, ahead of debuts from Canadian rockers Default and Seattle rockers Alice In Chains. "Street Of Dreams" follows "Better," which reached Top 15 and "Chinese Democracy," which made it to number 3.

Additionally, according to Neilsen/Soundscan, GN'R Greatest Hits is currently at number 19 on the Canadian Rock Album Charts. The album has been on the charts for 297 weeks and has risen one point over the past two weeks. Chinese Democracy topped the charts in its first week of release in 2008, selling 70,000 copies in Canada. The last time GN'R topped the charts prior to that was in 1991 with Use Your Illusion II.

The band is off to Asia this week for a couple concerts and then embarks on the Canadian tour starting in Winnipeg on January 13.

Slash N' Stockdale - "By the Sword"

Full setlist here.

My humble attempt at deciphering the lyrics (not official):

With the horses that you ride,
And the feelings left inside,
Comes a time you need to leave all that behind,
Well they claim they'd like to know,
And they'll fight you there to go,
And they're gatherin' around for all the show,

Well there is a reward,
To live and die by the sword,
Well they tried to complicate you,
But you left it all behind,
All the worldly possessions,
Are left for recollections,
And finally it's all gone!

They're releasing all the hounds,
What is lost can still be found,
When you're walking with your fear down on the ground,
Well there's those who choose to run
Following the setting sun,
And now it seems the journey's has begun,

Well there is a reward,
To live and die by the sword,
Well they tried to complicate you,
But you left it all behind,
All the worldly possessions,
Are left for recollections,
And finally it's all gone!

With the horses that you ride,
And the feelings left inside,
there's a time you need to leave it all behind,

Well there is no reward,
To live and die by the sword,
Well they tried to complicate you,
But you left it all behind,
All the worldly possessions,
Are left for recollections,
And finally it's all gone!

Live Review: SLASH & Friends (LAYN Rocks)

ARTIST DIRECT
The power of the riff compelled Slash and pretty much everyone else at LAYN Rocks last night.

The legendary Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver guitarist certainly knows how to give a crowd a good time and, alongside some friends, that's exactly what he did for almost two hours.

Those "friends" happened to be some of the most legendary men to ever pick up a microphone or a guitar. Sunday's AMA lineup far paled in comparison to LAYN Rocks—and the event was for a very good cause, helping homeless kids across Los Angeles.

Host George Lopez put it best, " With all due respect to the AMAs, this is the fuckin' place to be on Sunday night!"

Slash brought together the best and brightest rock n' roll stars of the past four decades for the most riff-tastic benefit show ever. There's nothing quite like watching him and Dave Navarro rip through Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," volleying the classic riff back and forth with a new vibrancy.

Slash infused the solo with gritty gutter blues, and the entire crowd was mesmerized by the six-string God. During Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak," Tom Morello tore through a scratchy lead that gave the song a hip hop fire and a spacey tone. Morello, Navarro and Slash complimented each other perfectly with each and every solo and riff brandishing its player's own signature.

Wolfmother's "Mother" had a deadly Black Sabbath-style stomp. Vocalist Andrew Stockdale gave a fiery performance worthy of the legends he shared the stage with, and Slash laid down a furious lead mid-song. During Zeppelin's "Tangerine," Slash donned a double neck and instantly transported the crowd back to the '70s.

However, the standout with Stockdale was he and Slash's original cut, "By the Sword," from Slash's forthcoming solo album. Smoky, ominous and psychedelic, the opening riff proved to be one of Slash's best. It's melancholy yet strangely energetic, and Stockdale's howl felt divinely otherworldly — a new classic.

Linkin Park and Dead By Sunrise mainman Chester Bennington gave "Good Times, Bad Times" a serious gusto that even Robert Plant couldn't conjure. Chester's got a classic old school rock n' roll edge and a modern sensitivity that makes him a true star. He's got one foot planted in tradition, but he's also the most forward thinking singer on the scene. He proved that during "Slither" and a raucous "Paradise City" complete with Stephen Adler behind the kit and Duff McKagan on bass. Chester definitely stood proudly even alongside Perry Farrell who did phenomenal renditions of "Mountain Song," "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Jane Says."

It all came back to the riff when Ozzy Osbourne hit the stage though. "I Don't Know," "Iron Man," "Crazy Train" and "Paranoid" exploded with Slash and Navarro lighting their fret boards up to finish the evening.

As Ozzy requested, the crowd went "fucking crazy," but it was all for a good cause—and the riffs are still resounding ... [ARTIST DIRECT]

Slash Teams with Ozzy, Billy Idol, Tom Morello & Chester Bennington

NME
Slash teamed up with Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol, Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello and Linkin Park's Chester Bennington for a special benefit concert in Los Angeles last night (November 22).

The ex-Guns N' Roses guitarist joined forces with a host of guest stars at the LAYN charity show at the Avalon to help raise funds for the homeless.

He was joined by his former bandmates Duff McKagan and Steve Adler, who also played with him in Velvet Revolver, plus Bennington, who fronted their rendition of "Paradise City.".

Slash was also joined by Wolfmother's Andrew Stockdale, Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro and Blink-182's Travis Barker for the show.

The guitarist is currently working on his solo album Slash And Friends which includes many of the guests who joined him onstage last night.

Update

From DJ Will:

Hello and FOR THE RECORD....

Feel I must clear the air a bit because of all the GNR Boards including this one discussing the rehearsals that cut & pasted my comments from Sludge on the heels of the initial one. I made the mistake of putting a positive spin replying to a post there about how great I thought the band sounded the night I saw them. I am NOT a "spy"or a reporter nor did I intend for my post(s) to provide some official "sneak peek"of whats to come..couldnt be further from the truth, but I see that it came off that way.
I was a guest who was given great hospitality by the GNR camp. Nothing more. Nothing less.

A few things I stated were inaccurate anyway so please know that my brief "review" shouldnt be taken as 100% gospel in the first place. Its rehearsal for a reason. Things change.

I look forward to seeing GNR kick ass live like the next person so please decide for yourselves especially those who'll get to see them next month and in the new year.

Thank you for reading.

More "Spies"

Today's update comes courtesy of DJ Will (KNAC) who posted this on the Metal Sludge Gossip boards. The info comes via Rancid Punks over at MyGNR
"I'm shocked this guy brought a camera & reported anything ... after the head production manager made two announcemets ... No Cameras!

I was there one night and it was pretty cool I must say.

No Axl of course.

Well, without giving away the full set (I promised Del!), they did a complete run through of about 17-18 songs for about a week. Lots of visuals that complement each track - pyro, spots, etc. Nice lighting truss design plus a fucking bad ass re-working of a theme song that leads into "Live & Let Die" written by Richard Fortus. Overall well done.

I loved "Shackler's Revenge," "Better," "Prostitute" & "Rocket Queen" live.

FYI: That middle ramp/riser has Axl's grand piano under it for quick access."
Thanks to Rancid Punks and DJ Will for this sneak peak into what is shaping up to be a "monumental" stage show.

LAYN Rocks

In this exclusive interview, Slash talks to ARTISTdirect.com editor Rick Florino about LAYN Rocks this Sunday, his upcoming solo record and Marty Scorsese ...

Slash is the rock n' roll equivalent of Martin Scorsese.

While maintaining a classic sensibility, he injects true grit and passion into each and every composition, just like Marty. Appetite for Destruction was Slash's Taxi Driver — a raw and primal piece of cathartic art. In the same vein, Contraband was his Casino — a sprawling epic collaboration by genre titans.

In between laying down tracks for his forthcoming Slash & Friends solo debut, the legendary guitarist is focused on giving back—much like our favorite filmmaker ...

This Sunday November 22nd at Avalon in Hollywood, Slash & Friends will play a benefit show for Los Angeles Youth Network [LAYN], an organization aiming to end homelessness among kids. Some of those "super friends" appearing at LAYN Rocks include Ozzy Osbourne, Perry Farrell, Billy Idol, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park & Dead By Sunrise, Travis Barker, Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother, Dave Navarro and a few surprise guests. Plus, Mr. George Lopez will be MC-ing.

It doesn't get anymore rock n' roll than that, and this is bound to be an unforgettable evening.

How did LAYN Rocks come together?

My wife, Perla, and I support LAYN. She's actually on the board. We're trying to raise money to keep it going, and we've been doing these Slash & Friends gigs recently. Basically, we get a bunch of people together and put on a concert. Perla had asked me if I'd be interested in doing it to support LAYN, and I was fully into it! This will actually be the first Slash & Friends gig I've done in Los Angeles. Basically, I wanted to put together something that would be a really big blowout, and that's what we've done! We've got all these different artists, and it should be an amazing event.

Does performing on stage with other musicians tend to breed studio collaborations later on for something like your solo record?

No, this show actually has nothing to do with my solo album. One doesn't feed the other. However, having done a couple gigs with Chester Bennington makes me think about him if I'm writing a song. If there's a song that's right for Chester, I'll be like, "I've jammed with him, he would be perfect for this!" Performing together on stage inadvertently fuels future collaborations. The correlation isn't totally direct though. But, if there was an idea, we may come back to it. The more people you know that are singers and musicians, the bigger pool you have to pull from when you want to do some sort of collaboration.

Andrew Stockdale's playing with you on Sunday. Are you going to do your song together?

We're talking about it [Laughs]. That seems to be the plan. That's a cool thing too. There's a song that I recorded with Ozzy, but we're not going to have a chance to learn it. I've actually done two songs on the record with two of these guys performing at LAYN Rocks.

When you play a benefit like this, is it more special than a regular gig in some aspects?

It is special! There's something about it. It's a one-night event. It's not totally self-centered — which is how a concert usually is [Laughs]. Everybody is hanging out and having a good time. There's no pressure. You don't feel the pressure of having to be "The Headliner" and having an entire set to put together. People can leave all of those concerns at home and simply get up and jam. Because everybody is a pro, the jams are really good [Laughs]. The audience has no idea what they're in for because most of them have never seen anything like it. It turns out to be a really exciting event for everybody involved. It's a lot of fun.

The energy in the room must be particularly palpable because everyone is playing for the same goal — even though you're all from different bands.

Exactly! There's definitely a feeling of camaraderie and a feeling of giving and caring as well. It's really cool.

Do you have anymore of these benefits planned?

This is the only one that I've got going on. After Sunday, the holidays are coming, I've got a record coming out and all of this other stuff happening. One thing I've got to tell you — you lose a lot of sleep trying to get these things together [Laughs].

Well, the lineup looks legendary enough to be worth the sleep deprivation.

[Laughs] Musicians are coming from all different directions. We'll all convene over the weekend and rehearse. Then we'll put it together on Sunday and see how it goes. It should be a lot of fun! I've worked with pretty much everybody on the bill. I've never played with Travis Barker before, which is going to be cool. I've never worked with Andrew Stockdale outside of the studio, but he's a great guy. I've played with Chester, Dave Navarro, Billy Idol, Perry Farrell and Ozzy live before. Having all of these amazing get together is incredible. For me, to be on stage the whole night while they walk up is huge.

There's a '70s vibe to the whole event. It's very classic. In many ways, you're like a filmmaker from that particular renaissance. You're like the Scorsese of the guitar! There's an outlaw vibe but an epic sense of refinement ...

[Laughs] That's a huge compliment! I love Scorsese! I was obviously raised in the '70s, and I come from the outlaw rock n' roll background as far as who I was raised with, what my parents were all about, what kind of music I listened to and so on. I would imagine I've gotten some influence from that which has spilled over into what I've been doing since I picked up a guitar. I like that old, '70s vibe where people just get together and jam for the sake of making music as opposed to everything being the way things are today. Now it's money-driven, image-driven and that corporate sort of thing. It's nice to be able to make a minute and do something that has nothing to do with any outside interests except for jamming — especially if you're doing it for a cause.

Is that vibe spilling over into your solo material?

The solo stuff is really cool because it does have a similar vibe. It wasn't created for any kind of cause, benefit, fundraising or anything like that but, at the same time, there's something to it. The last couple bands I've been in — Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses and even Snakepit — there were so many concerns coming from the record company about so many different things. The pressure can be a little bit of a drag at times especially if you've got ego problems within the band. That's what being in a rock n' roll band can be about. I wanted to do a solo record so I could do something that I'd dictate myself and would be my responsibility. Whether it sinks or swims is all up to me. To get a bunch of people together who I think are really talented and have them sing is amazing. The singers were all great because they didn't have to worry about pressures from their record labels about whether or not the song was going to be a huge hit single. I got amazing performances because the whole thing was so laidback. That's one of the similarities between my record and this concert that we're doing on Sunday. It's really done for the pure joy of it, as opposed to trying to prove something, trying to sell a certain number of copies or whatever it is that motivates everybody these days [Laughs].
