Rick Richards Has Got Soul

EDIT: Rick Richards is an amazing and talented guitarist, who does indeed "have soul," but unfortunately, he is NOT playing on this track.
Very nice and all but that ain't Rick Richards playing the solo, it's Ronnie Wood himself.. he's guesting on that Izzy track w/ guitar and vocals. They recorded it live at 4 am after first watching 'Spartacus' at Ronnie's place.

There's an old JJH live bootleg track where they're covering the Faces' My Fault, that one has an incredible guitar solo played by Rick Richards, who also sang the song live. That one truly has soul.

- Marc Ford plays guitar and slide guitar on Somebody Knockin' but he isn't credited in the album; the rumour says his bandmates from The Black Crowes weren't happy of his guest apperances, Marc Ford: "I wasn't in the credits on the Ju Ju Hounds record because I just joined the Crowes around Thanksgiving of 1991, and I think we already recorded the Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, but certain personalities in that band didn't want people to think I was just a gun for hire. As a result of that over the years, I found out later on they were answering for me on a lot of really cool gigs in the studio. Now there are people who still think I don't want to do any studio gigs? Things with Joe Cocker and stuff like that?".

Jimmy Ashhurst: "Marc isn't credited because at the time he had just joined the Black Crowes. I think at that point he had just gotten back to town from Georgia where they had recorded "The Southern Harmony..." album. His relationship with those guys was still pretty new and neither he nor I were sure about how they would have reacted to Marc working on outside projects. I don't know if he had a contract or what, but it turns out we were all great friends and it probaly wouldn't have mattered if we had credited him. I'm just glad that now there are a few people who know it was him...great playing. One of my other great buddies and amazing players Craig Ross (Lenny Kravitz Band), who was in my first band The Broken Homes with me also played on a few tracks. Whenever I listen to that album I love trying to pick out the different guitar playing styles. I think just about all my favorite guitar players ended up on that album...doesn't happen every day". Eddie Ashhworth: "One of the great evenings of my career. Someone had been in contact with Ronny and found out he was open to recording with Izzy. There was this big release party for Ronny’s “Slip on This” [Slide On This] album at A&M Studios one night, so we got set up at Total Access studios in advance to record a song with Izzy and Ron. Then we all went up to A&M and hung out the party for a couple of hours. It was a real Hollywood scene. Even Phil Spector was there, holding out his hand like a pistol and pretending to shoot people who pissed him off!!

Anyway, as the party was winding down, I got the word that Ron would be ready to record after the party. Charlie and I drove back to Redondo and waited, for quite a while actually. Apparently, Ron went back to his pad and decided to watch “Spartacus” in its entirety, while Izzy, Jimmy and Alan waited.

Finally, we got the call at the studio that the movie had finished and everyone was on their way down. This was sometime after midnight. Finally, the crew showed up. Ron’s charming wife, Jo, helped him carry in a bewildering array of alcohol (a fifth of vodka, case of beer, some kind of expensive brandy). We were already set up with everyone else’s sound, so we took a few minutes to get Ron dialed in. I believe we recorded the basic track of Ronny’s “Take a Look at the Guy” live in a couple of takes. Izzy and Ron’s vocal were overdubbed live simultaneously. That was kind of tricky, because they were in the same room and Izzy sings kind of quietly and Ron is loud, so there was a lot of Ron in Izzy’s vocal track.

I will never forget the playback of that track after we recorded the vocals. I was sitting at the board, adjusting the faders as everyone listened. I felt a tap on my shoulder, and it was Ron, grinning like a loon with his drink swaying precariously in his hand, giving be a big thumbs up. Quite a thrill!!.

Ian’s keyboards were recorded a couple of weeks later during his sessions at Total Access. Kind of funny, it took him a while to remember the parts that he originated…! He is such a great guy, very char
